Joseph Clemens von Plettenberg

Joseph Clemens Franz Anton Maria Reichsgraf von Plettenberg (born March 25, 1721 at Hovestadt Castle ; † May 12, 1786 ) was hereditary treasurer and official in Werl , Neheim and Ostinghausen .

Life

Origin and family

As the son of Friedrich Bernhard Wilhelm von Plettenberg (1695–1730) and his wife Agnes Sophia von Westerholt zu Lembeck (1696–1768), Joseph Clemens von Plettenberg grew up with his siblings, including

in one of the oldest and most important noble families in Westphalia .

On November 28, 1745 he married Klara Regina Adriana Droste zu Füchten († 1764, daughter of Ernst Dietrich Anton von Droste zu Füchten and his wife Ursula Sybilla von Plettenberg). The daughters were out of the marriage

(all canonesses).

After Klara's death in 1764 he concluded his second marriage with Maria Theresia von Weichs zu Körtlinghausen (1748–1796). From this marriage come the son August Joseph (1767-1805, treasurer and official droste) and the daughter Maria Anna (* 1769, ∞ 1804 Alexander von Krane zu Brockhausen).

Career and work

With the receipt of the tonsure on March 23, 1731 Joseph Clemens was prepared for a spiritual life. After he was appointed Electoral Cologne Chamberlain in 1741 , he studied at the Pontificium Collegium Germanicum et Hungaricum de Urbe in Rome. On July 21, 1744, he was appointed to the official DROSTEN in Werl, Neheim and Ostinghausen, and on January 6, 1745 he was sworn to the knighthood of Münster and thus belonged to the state parliament of the Münster bishopric , a committee made up of the three estates. His task was to regulate the tax system and from 1447 also the feudal system in the bishopric of Münster . Joseph Clemens was hereditary treasurer in the Duchy of Westphalia and ancestral lord.
