Joseph E. Steinmetz

Joseph Edward Steinmetz (born January 6, 1955 ) is an American biopsychologist and university civil servant . He has been the Chancellor of the University of Arkansas since January 1, 2016 .

Life

Steinmetz studied at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant , Michigan , where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology in 1977 and a Master of Arts degree in experimental psychology in 1979 . In 1983 he received his Ph.D. from Ohio University in Athens , Ohio. in Physiological Psychology . His dissertation was entitled A model system approach for the study of memory processes: fixation of spinal reflex aterations in spinalized rats . Steinmetz then worked at Stanford University , first from 1983 to 1985 as a NIMH Postdoctoral Research Fellow , then from 1985 to 1987 as a Research Associate . In 1987 he moved to Indiana University in Bloomington , where he taught from 1987 to 1991 as an assistant professor , from 1991 to 1995 as an associate professor and from 1995 to 2006 as a professor of psychology, neuroscience and cognitive science . He was Eleanor Cox Riggs Professor of Psychology from 1999 to 2006 and was named Distinguished Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences in 2006. In addition to teaching, he was chairman of the Department of Psychology from 1995 to 2004 .

From 2006 to 2009 he was professor of molecular biotechnology and psychology at the University of Kansas . At the same time he served there from 2006 to 2009 as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences . In 2007 he was named a Distinguished Professor by the University of Kansas . His next teaching position brought him to Ohio State University from 2009 to 2015 . There he was professor of molecular biotechnology and psychology, professor of neuroscience, and from 2013 to 2015 Executive Vice President and Provost . He has been the Chancellor of the University of Arkansas since January 1, 2016.

Steinmetz is a member of the Society for Neuroscience (since 1980), the International Brain Research Organization (since 1980), the Association for Psychological Science (since 1988), the Pavlovian Society (since 1997) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (since 2000). He was also a member of the American Psychological Association from 1983 to 2006 and of the Research Society on Alcoholism from 1999 to 2007 . He had previously served as President of the Pavlovian Society and the Association for Psychological Science .

In 1996 he was elected a Fellow of the American Psychological Society (now the Association for Psychological Science ). He was later elected a Fellow by the American Psychological Association (2002), the Society of Experimental Psychologists (2005), and the American Association for the Advancement of Science (2011).

Steinmetz is married and has two sons.
