Joseph Florimond Loubat (born January 31, 1831 in New York , † March 1, 1927 in Paris ) was an American philanthropist.

Life

Joseph Florimond Loubat was the son of the Franco-American engineer Alphonse Loubat (1799–1866), who came from Sainte-Livrade-sur-Lot and immigrated from France to the USA in the construction of horse-drawn trams from New York City (1832) and Paris (1852) introduced and held corresponding patents. Joseph Florimond enrolled at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and became active in the Corps Saxo-Borussia in 1849 . He continued his studies in New York City and finished it very successfully at the University of Paris . The University of Jena gave him on 11 December in 1869 , Dr. iur. hc Explanation: “For the promotion of American antiquity and as a patron of the Law Faculty of the University of Jena” (donation of 30,000 francs)

Financially independent, Loubat toured all of Europe. He was a welcome guest in many governments. He met Pope Leo XIII. 1892 know in an audience and was in the following year by him as Duc de Loubat ennobled ( Order of Pope Pius IX ).

As a regatta sailor and member of the New York Yacht Club , he promoted early yachting in Europe and the United States. In 1873 he was defeated with his gaff-rigged schooner yacht Enchantress of the yacht Dreadnaught in the Cape May Challenge Cup and in 1874 he won the regatta from Le Havre to Southampton and the Cape May Cup with the Enchantress . Loubat sailed in American and European waters as far as the Baltic Sea to Sweden and Russia. He wrote his sailing memories about this under the title A Yachtsman's Scrap Book, or the Ups and Downs of Yacht Racing.

Loubat published the Codex Telleriano-Remensis in 1901 . He donated mainly to museums, schools and universities; u. a. he set up endowed professorships for ancient American and American studies and financed them throughout his life. Loubat donated the Loubat Prize named after him, which was awarded between 1913 and 1958 for outstanding publications in the social sciences . The Columbia University supervised this foundation and also gave this award.

Joseph Florimond Loubat died at the age of 96 in Paris and found his final resting place in the family grave on the Cimetière de Passy , which was moved there in 1885 .
