Joseph Kaithathara

Joseph Kaithathara (born June 22, 1939 in Gothuruthy , Kerala ) is an Indian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Gwalior .

Life

Joseph Kaithathara went to Rome in 1957 to study theology , where he was ordained a priest on December 21, 1963 . After his ordination he stayed in Rome for further studies until 1972. During his studies in Rome, he visited Germany in the summer months in order to take over vacation substitutes in some parishes in Bavaria and Hesse. This resulted in many contacts in the dioceses of Regensburg and Mainz , which he maintains to this day through a circle of friends.

In 1973 he received his doctorate in canon law . From 1973 to 1996 he taught as a professor in the regional seminar in Allahabad, northern India . In 1996 he was given a new role as pastor in Gwalior.

On February 9, 1999, Pope John Paul II appointed him first bishop of the diocese of Gwalior, which was established on the same date . The bishop of Jhansi , Frederick D'Souza , donated him episcopal ordination on May 1, 1999 in Gwalior. Co- consecrators were the former bishop of Allahabad , Baptist Mudartha , and the bishop of Kottapuram , Francis Kallarakal .

During his tenure, also through the support of the German Circle of Friends, eight schools as well as health and social stations, a boys' seminar and a hospital were created. There are also numerous well bores.

On October 18, 2016, Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation.
