Joseph Kober (* 1823 in Kirchheim in Swabia ; † after 1884) was an academic painter of the Nazarenes and one of the most important church painters of the Bavarian-Swabian late Nazarist circle.

Life

Joseph Kober was born in Kirchheim in Swabia in 1823 . He comes from a well-known Swabian executioner family. His father was the church painter Johann Pankraz Kober (1796-1832), who worked on furnishing numerous churches in Central Swabia and is considered the progenitor of the painter family. His mother was Creszentia Sedelmayer. His siblings were his younger brother Karl Kober (1824–1877), who later became a decorative painter, and his sister Carolina Kober (* 1820). In 1828 he moved with his family to Göggingen near Augsburg . On June 28, 1858, he married Charitas Schittenhelm from Straßberg in Bobingen , where he also lived for a time.

He attended the then Augsburg art school . The register books of the Munich Art Academy from 1844/45 prove that he studied painting there. The training on the works of Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld and Heinrich Maria von Hess had a lasting impact on his artistic work.

A close collaboration developed with Ferdinand Wagner . He was involved in furnishing numerous churches. His last documented work is the Stations of the Cross in the Leonhards Chapel in Hiltenfingen from 1884. Alongside Ferdinand Wagner , Johann Nepomuk Kaspar and Liberat Hundertpfund , he is one of the most important representatives of the Bavarian-Swabian late Nazarist circle. The dates of death are unknown.
