Joseph Lange (born April 1, 1751 in Würzburg , † September 17, 1831 in Vienna ) was a German actor , painter, composer and writer. He is the painter of what is probably the most popular picture by his brother-in-law Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , which was probably made in 1782/83 and - as the musicologist Michael Lorenz recognized in 2009 - originally only showed Mozart's head in a 19 × 15 cm format. Probably in 1789 he had started to enlarge the small portrait to which he wanted to add Mozart's torso and a piano, but which was never completed.

Career

Long portrait of Mozart in its original format

Joseph Lange came to Vienna in 1767. He initially wanted to be a painter and attended art academy . Together with his older brother Michael Joseph Lange, he built a theater for lovers. Joseph von Sonnenfels recognized the brothers' talent and won them both for the big stage. In 1770 they made their debut at the Vienna Kärntnertortheater in the world premiere of “Brutus” by Joachim Wilhelm von Brawe . Lange brother died in 1771, but found a new mentor in Sonnenfels. Lange played at the court theater until 1811.

In addition, Lange did not give up painting either and specialized in portraits here. He also composed operettas (such as Adelheid von Ponthieu ) and songs. He also wrote an autobiography that appeared in 1808. He dedicated the 26th chapter in it to his brother-in-law Mozart.

Lange was married twice. His first wife died after a short marriage in 1779. His second wife Luise Maria Antonia, nee. Weber , was a successful singer and the sister of Constanze Mozart .
