Joseph Mary Marling

Joseph Mary Marling CPpS (born August 31, 1904 in Centralia , West Virginia , † October 2, 1979 ) was an American religious and first bishop of Jefferson City .

Life

Joseph Mary Marling joined the community of the Missionaries of the Precious Blood in and received on 21 February 1929 he the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Pope Pius XII appointed him on June 7, 1947 titular bishop of Thasus and auxiliary bishop in Kansas City . He received his episcopal ordination on August 6th of that year by the Bishop of Kansas City, Edwin Vincent O'Hara . Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Lansing , Joseph Henry Albers , and the Bishop of Lafayette, Indiana , John George Bennett . Joseph Mary Marling found his episcopal motto in Colossians ( Col 1.20  EU ): Latin Per Sanguinem Crucis ( through the blood of the cross ).

On August 24, 1956, Pope Pius XII appointed him. first bishop of the newly formed Jefferson City Diocese . He was president of the National Catholic Rural Life Conference (NCRLC) and a founding member of the Missouri Catholic Conference .

Bishop Marling attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council as the Council Father.

At the request of Peruvian confreres, he began in 1962 to send diocesan priests from his diocese to Peru as Fidei Donum priests , especially in parishes in the diocese of Puno . At times 10% of the clergy of the Jefferson City diocese were missionaries in Peru.

Pope Paul VI accepted on July 2, 1969 his renunciation of the diocese of Jefferson and appointed him titular bishop of Lesina . He renounced the titular seat with effect from January 16, 1976.
