Joseph Rosenauer (also Josef Rosenauer ; born January 26, 1735 in Kalsching , Bohemia ; † March 10, 1804 in Krumau , Bohemia) was a forest engineer and land surveyor in the service of the Schwarzenbergs .

Life

Joseph Rosenauer began an apprenticeship at the age of 13 in the Princely Schwarzenberg Pheasantry in Rotenhof ( Červený Dvůr ) near Kalsching. After showing an extraordinary talent for forestry , he became an assistant to the Princely Forestry Administration in Krumau in 1759, which later enabled him to study at the Vienna Engineering Academy. After an excellent graduation in May 1770, he was awarded the title of Princely Forest Engineer a year later. After subsequent geodetic studies and tests, he was appointed a sworn land surveyor in 1774.

One of his most significant successes was the construction of the Schwarzenberg alluvial canal . It created a connection between the upper Vltava and the Danube , which enabled the wood to be transported from the Bohemian Forest , which was then difficult to access, to Vienna at low cost. He presented the plans, which Rosenauer all calculated and drew himself, as early as 1774. Although the design had already been approved by the landlord Johann von Schwarzenberg in 1779, construction could not begin until ten years later, as the privilege of flooding wood on the Große Mühl , into which the canal was supposed to flow, belonged to the diocese of Passau until then . From 1789 the construction of the first part took place, which stretched over 40 kilometers and led from the Zwettelbach ( Světlý potok ) to the Hirschbach ( Jelení potok ). In 1791, Rosenauer was promoted to director of the Schwarzenberg water transport for services related to the project.

1799-1800 Rosenauer built the Rechelbrücke and the 14.5 kilometer long Chinitz-Tettauer Schwemmkanal , which also served to transport wood from the Bohemian Forest. Today it is a technical monument .

Another project by Rosenauer was the Rosenhofer ponds , which he created for the Counts Czernin-Kinsky in the municipality of Sandl in the Mühlviertel .

Josef Rosenauer died in 1804 at the age of 69 in his house in Krumau. In 2000, a museum of the Schwarzenberg alluvial canal was opened at his birthplace, Chvalšiny. There is a memorial plaque on the house where he was born.
