Joseph Schlessinger

Joseph Schlessinger (born March 26, 1945 ) is an Israeli - American pharmacologist at Yale University . He is best known for his involvement in the development of the chimeric monoclonal antibody cetuximab , which is used as a novel cancer drug.

Schlessinger acquired in 1968 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem a Bachelor in chemistry and physics, in 1969 the same place a Master in Chemistry and in 1974 at the Weizmann Institute of Science a Ph.D. in biophysics . He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Cornell University and Immunology at the National Cancer Institute . From 1978 to 1991 he was a member of the teaching staff at the Weizmann Institute. After a professorship at New York University , he has been Professor of Pharmacology at Yale University since 2001 .

Schlessinger was Research Director at Rorer Biotechnology (merged into Rhône-Poulenc ) and is co-founder of the biotechnology companies Sugen , Plexxikon and Kolltan . He belongs to or was the editor of several scientific journals , including Cell and Molecular Cell.

Schlessinger and coworkers deal with the function of the receptors for growth factors and their intracellular signal transmission ( second messenger ), in particular with diseases that are caused by malfunctions of tyrosine kinases or other elements of the signal cascade.

Schlessinger has (as of October 2018) an h-index of 176.
