Joseph Vernon Fougère

Joseph Vernon Fougère (born May 20, 1943 in Petit-de-Grat , Nova Scotia, † June 18, 2013 in Charlottetown ) was Roman Catholic Bishop of Charlottetown .

Life

Joseph Vernon Fougere entered the seminary in Montreal a studied Catholic theology at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish. He was ordained a priest on May 31, 1969 . He was active in pastoral care in various churches in Nova Scotia , and he was involved in missionary work in Honduras for seven years . He was there u. a. Member of the Priestly Council of the Archdiocese of Tegucigalpa .

He attended the Jesuit Theological Union at the University of California and was appointed Vicar General in the Diocese of Antigonish in 1988 after pastoral work . He was also head of pastoral services. He was chairman of the Antigonish Diocese of Priests and served on the Board of Governors for St. Francis Xavier University.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Charlottetown on December 11, 1991 . The Bishop of Antigonish , Colin Campbell , ordained him episcopal on March 19 the next year ; Co - consecrators were Austin-Emile Burke , Archbishop of Halifax , and William Edward Power , Bishop Emeritus of Antigonish. He was a member of the National Council of the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace and, in 2000, a member of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Mission in Canada.

On July 11, 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request for health reasons.
