Joseph von Gerlach

Joseph von Gerlach (born April 3, 1820 in Mainz , † December 17, 1896 in Munich ) was a German anatomist , histologist and professor at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen . From 1865 to 1866 he was rector of the university.

Live and act

Gerlach spent his childhood and youth in Aschaffenburg and studied medicine at the universities of Würzburg , Munich and Berlin from 1837 . He received his doctorate in Munich in 1841 . After a stay in Vienna, he returned to Berlin in 1842 before completing the state medical examination at the University of Giessen in 1844 . Stays in Paris , London and Dublin followed . In 1846 he settled in Mainz as a doctor. In 1850, he succeeded Gottfried Fleischmann as a professor of anatomy at the University of Erlangen. He headed the institute until 1891. Until Isidor Rosenthal was appointed in 1872, he also held lectures in physiology. In 1896 he was retired.

Gerlach was one of the founders of the histological staining technique and anatomical microphotography . He was the first to show that skin respiration also takes place in humans . A fold of mucous membrane between he described caecum ( cecum ), and appendix ( the vermiform appendix ) is used as Gerlach flap designated. In 1872, with his work on the structure of the gray matter of the brain, he also created the basis for researching the architecture of the cortex.

In 1850 Gerlach was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . Since 1883 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .

He was married to Therese Moritz from 1847. His son Leo was also an anatomist and successor to his father in Erlangen. His daughter Agnes was Emil Fischer's wife .
