Josh Thompson took part in three Winter Olympics. At the 1984 Games in Sarajevo , he competed in the sprint and was 40th and with Bill Carow , Donald Nielsen Jr. and Lyle Nelson in the season with which he was eleventh as the final runner. Four years later , the American competed in all three possible races in Calgary . In the sprint, Thompson reached 27th place, in the individual he was 25th and with Nelson, Curt Schreiner and Darin Binning in the relay, where he was again used as the final runner, ninth. In 1992 he was able to contest all three races again in Albertville . In the sprint, Thompson ran to 32nd place, in the individual he was 16th and with Jon Engen , Duncan Douglas and Schreiner 13th in the relay. Thompson achieved his greatest international success at the Biathlon World Championships in 1987 in Lake Placid . Behind the triple world champion Frank-Peter Roetsch and in front of the Czechoslovak Jan Matouš , he took silver. It was also the best ever result for an American in biathlon. Thompson is a member of the US Biathlon Hall of Fame .
