Emmanuel Josip Stjepan Garić ( OFM ) (born October 28, 1870 in Vitez near Travnik , Vilâyet Bosnia , Ottoman Empire ; † June 30, 1946 in Graz , Austria ) was the first bishop of the Roman Catholic diocese of Banja Luka in Bosnia, founded in 1881 .

Life

As Stephan Garic, he entered the Franciscan order in 1889. He took the religious name of Emanuel Joseph at, studied from 1887 to 1889 philosophy and from 1889 to 1893 theology in Pécs and was on July 30, 1893. religious priests ordained . He was initially active in the parish pastoral and in 1907 became secretary and vicar general of Bishop Marijan Marković . In 1912 he was elected Definitor ( Provincial Council ) of the Bosnian Franciscan Province of Bosna Argentina .

On December 14, 1912 he was appointed by Pope Pius X as the first bishop of Banja Luka, after the on July 5, 1881 by Pope Leo XIII. established diocese was previously administered by apostolic administrators . The episcopal ordination received his Cardinal Diomede Falconio OFM on 20 February of the following year. Co- consecrators were Giacomo (Alexander) Ghezzi OFM, the Bishop of Civita Castellana and Bernhard Joseph Doebbing OFM, the Bishop of Nepo and Sutri .

He founded new parishes, had churches and schools built. He led his diocese in two world wars and through times of need.

Due to a serious illness he had to leave his diocese in 1945, first went to Zagreb for treatment and then to Graz .

He died in Graz on June 30, 1946 at the age of 75 and was buried there.
