Jozef Cardinal De Kesel (born June 17, 1947 in Ghent , East Flanders ) is a Roman Catholic clergyman, Primate of Belgium, Archbishop of Mechlin-Brussels and Belgian military bishop .

Jozef De Kesel studied at the seminaries in Ghent and Leuven and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. On August 26, 1972, he was ordained a priest through his uncle Leo De Kesel , who was auxiliary bishop in Ghent from 1969 to 1990 . In 1977 he was with a thesis on the historical Jesus in the theology of Rudolf Bultmann doctorate . He was a lecturer at the Sociale Hogeschool Gent and professor for fundamental theology and philosophical anthropology at the seminary in Gent (Groot Seminarie Gent) and at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven . De Kesel was Episcopal Vicar for theological and pastoral formation in the diocese of Ghent from 1992 to 2002 .

On 20 March 2002 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Bulna and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels . De Kesel's inauguration took place on December 12, 2015.

De Kesel advocates the ordination of married men to the priesthood.

In 2016 De Kesel dissolved the canonically established by his predecessor André-Joseph Léonard in 2013 and founded by Michel-Marie Zanotti-Sorkine, the Brotherhood of the Holy Apostles , which was confirmed by Pope Francis in April 2018.

In April 2018, De Kesel publicly demanded that the Catholic Church leadership should respect sex among homosexual couples and that the demand for abstinence was no longer tenable. Sexuality must "take place in the context of a relationship in which honesty, reliability and commitment are central," said De Kesel. He also called for the public blessing of same-sex couples to be allowed .
