Juan Bernardo Huyke

Juan Bernardo Huyke (born June 11, 1880 in Arroyo , †  December 17, 1961 in San Juan ) was a Puerto Rican politician . In 1923 he was acting governor of Puerto Rico.

Career

Juan Huyke was a school superintendent in his home town between 1908 and 1910 . He advocated bilingual education. From 1912 to 1920 he was a member of the House of Representatives of Puerto Rico . Between 1921 and 1930 he was the Minister of Education of Puerto Rico as Commissioner of Public Instruction .

In 1923, Huyke served as acting governor of the territory for a few months. He bridged the time between the resignation of his predecessor Emmet Montgomery Reily and the assumption of office of the new governor Horace Mann Towner . Between 1935 and 1945, Huyke headed the Puerto Rico Service Commission. He died in San Juan on December 17, 1961.
