Pedro Juan Rosselló González (born April 5, 1944 in San Juan ) is a Puerto Rican politician . Between 1993 and 2001 he was governor of Puerto Rico.

Career

Pedro Rosselló first attended the Academia Santa Teresita and the Academia del Perpetuo Socorro in San Juan. He then studied at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana until 1966 . This was followed by a medical degree at Yale University until 1970 ; this he continued at Harvard University . After his admission as a doctor, he began to work in this profession in San Juan. At the same time he continued his medical education at the University of Puerto Rico there until 1981 . He later taught law at both Harvard and the University of Puerto Rico. He was also the head of surgery at that university's children's hospital. In 1985 he became the San Juan City Health Officer.

Politically, Rosselló joined the Democratic Party of the United States and the Puerto Rican Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP). In 1988 he ran unsuccessfully for the office of Congress Delegate ( Resident Commissioner ) for Puerto Rico. In 1991 he became party leader of the PNP. He held this office until 1999. In 1992, Rafael Hernández Colón was elected as the new governor of Puerto Rico. After being re-elected, he was able to serve two terms between January 2, 1993 and January 2, 2001. During this time, a health reform was passed there.

In 1999 Rosselló renounced another candidacy. He moved to Boston , Massachusetts and taught at Harvard University's John F. Kennedy School of Government . He later held medical lectures at George Washington University in Washington, DC. He then returned to Puerto Rico, where he once again chaired the PNP between 2003 and 2008. From 2005 to 2008 he was also a member of the Puerto Rico Senate . In 2006 he organized the so-called March against US Colonization in Puerto Rico . He called for the end of territorial status and the accession of his area as the 51st state to the United States.

Pedro Rosselló is married and has three grown sons. The son Ricky Rosselló was also elected governor of Puerto Rico in 2016.
