Wanda Vázquez (2019)

Wanda Vázquez Garced (born July 9, 1960 in San Juan ) is a Puerto Rican lawyer and politician . She has been the governor of Puerto Rico since August 7, 2019 .

Wanda Vázquez Garced grew up in Guaynabo . She studied law at the private university Universidad Interamericana de Puerto Rico .

In the 1980s she worked in the Puerto Rican Government's Housing Department. From 1989 she worked for about 20 years as a district attorney in the Justice Department. She worked in departments against domestic and sexual violence, as well as in the Bayamón Public Prosecutor's Office . In December 2010, Vázquez was appointed head of the women's advocacy (Procuradora de las Mujeres) . In January 2017 she was appointed Justice Minister of Puerto Rico under Governor Ricardo Rosselló .

Like Rosselló, Vázquez is a member of the Partido Nuevo Progresista . In July 2019, in the wake of the Telegramgate affair, there were mass protests that lasted for days against Rosselló, who finally announced his resignation on August 2, 2019. Since the Puerto Rican Secretary of State Luis Rivera Marín had also resigned, Vázquez should take over the office of governor. She would then hold the office until the 2020 elections. Many demonstrators criticized this, they accused the Justice Minister of protecting party colleagues from legal prosecution and that she was part of the corrupt system. Vázquez announced on July 28, 2019 that he did not want to take over the office of governor. After resistance against the proposed Pedro Pierluisi became apparent, she agreed to step in if necessary. Finally, on August 2, 2019, Pierluisi was sworn in as governor. But after the Puerto Rican Supreme Court ruled Pierluisi's swearing in as unconstitutional, Vázquez Garced was sworn in as the new governor on August 7, 2019.

In December 2019, Vázquez announced that he would run for the 2020 gubernatorial election, but her party colleague Pierluisi was elected as a candidate for the Partido Nuevo Progresista in the pre-election in August 2020.
