George Radcliffe Colton

George Radcliffe Colton (born April 10, 1865 in Galesburg , Illinois , †  April 6, 1916 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician and governor of Puerto Rico from 1909 to 1913 .

Career

Nothing is known about George Colton's youth and schooling. He was born in Illinois and later moved to Nebraska , where he served in the government's military. From 1889 to 1890 he sat in the Nebraska House of Representatives . During an uprising in the Philippines , he was sent there as a lieutenant colonel in a unit from Nebraska. In 1899 he became deputy head of customs in the port of Iloilo . He later became head of this agency. In 1905 he was commissioned as a colonel to set up a customs administration in the Dominican Republic . In 1907 he returned to the Philippines and headed the customs service in Manila . Another two years later he returned to the American mainland, where he worked on the revision of the customs laws of the Philippines.

In November 1909, Colton was appointed governor of Puerto Rico by President William Howard Taft to succeed Regis Henri Post . He held this office until November 5, 1913. Then Arthur Yager took over . After his time as governor ended, Colton retired into private life. He settled back in the United States and did private business there. George Colton died of a tropical disease in Washington on April 6, 1916. He was married and had two sons.
