Arthur Yager
Arthur Yager (born October 29, 1858 in Henry County , Kentucky , USA , † December 24, 1941 in Pewee Valley , Kentucky, USA) was governor of Puerto Rico from 1913 to 1921 .
He taught history and politics at Georgetown College in Kentucky. From 1908 to 1913 he was president of the college.
Then US President Woodrow Wilson , Yager's fellow student at Johns Hopkins University , appointed him as Democrat governor of Puerto Rico. He held the office until the end of Wilson's presidency. He was succeeded by Emmet Montgomery Reily .
During Yager's tenure in Puerto Rico, the US Congress passed the Jones-Shafroth Act in 1917 , which granted Puerto Ricans US citizenship . A collection of Yager's correspondence as governor is available in the archives of the Filson Historical Society in Louisville .
