Guy J. Swope

Guy Jacob Swope (born December 26, 1892 in Meckville , Berks County , Pennsylvania , †  July 25, 1969 in New York City ) was an American politician . Between 1937 and 1939 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives . In 1941 he was governor of Puerto Rico .

Career

Guy Swope attended his home public schools, Keystone State Teachers College in Kutztown and Columbia University School of International Affairs . Between 1909 and 1913 he was a teacher in Lebanon County ; from 1913 to 1918 he worked as the Internal Revenue Agent for the Federal Tax Service (IRS). He then worked as an auditor between 1919 and 1934. From 1935 to 1937 he served as Budget Secretary for the state of Pennsylvania finances. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1936 congressional elections , Swope was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 19th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Isaac Hoffer Doutrich on January 3, 1937 . Since he was not confirmed in 1938, he could only serve one term in Congress until January 3, 1939 . During this time, further New Deal laws were passed by the federal government under President Franklin D. Roosevelt .

After the end of his time in the US House of Representatives, Swope initially worked again as an accountant. Between January 1940 and February 1941 he was an auditor for the territorial government of Puerto Rico. From February to August 1941 he was acting governor there. In 1941 and 1942 he was employed by the US Department of the Interior . He then served as District Director of the Office of Price Administration in Harrisburg until 1943 . During World War II , he was an officer in the United States Navy Reserve from 1943 to 1946 . In 1947 and 1948 he was a civilian member of the American Provisional Administration in Tokyo . He then worked in the State of Pennsylvania Treasury Department until 1949. From 1949 to 1954 he was a member of the staff of the American High Commissioner in Germany .

In 1956, Guy Swope sought his return to Congress without success. Otherwise he worked as a sworn auditor. From 1956 to 1961 he was director and comptroller of the company Lake Asphalt & Petroleum Co. He then worked until 1965 in the Treasury Department of his home state. He died in New York on July 25, 1969.
