Guy Vernor Henry

Guy Vernor Henry (born March 9, 1839 in Fort Smith , Arkansas , †  October 27, 1899 in Washington, DC ) was an American officer. He was the military governor of Puerto Rico in 1898 and 1899 .

Career

Guy Henry graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1861 and began a long military career. During the Civil War he served as an officer in the Union Army . For his military service during the Battle of Cold Harbor in 1864, he was awarded the Medal of Honor in 1893 . After the war he continued to serve in the US Army , where he was promoted to brigadier general. He was mainly used in the western United States in Indian campaigns, where he was also wounded. He served in various cavalry units , including the 10th Cavalry, which, with the exception of the officers, consisted of African American soldiers. In the meantime he was also in command of Fort Myer , Virginia .

During the Spanish-American War of 1898 , Guy Henry served as Brigadier General in Puerto Rico. In December 1898 he was appointed governor to succeed John R. Brooke . In February 1899 he dissolved the local parliament. He also abolished the tax on staple foods. In May 1899 he was replaced by General George Whitefield Davis . He died on October 27 of the same year in the federal capital Washington and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
