Juan Del Campo (born June 28, 1994 in Bilbao , Basque Country ) is a Spanish ski racer . The two-time Spanish champion specializes in the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom .

biography

Juan Del Campo comes from the city of Mungia in the province of Bizkaia in northern Spain. His parents taught him how to ski at the age of three in the Baqueira-Beret Pyrenees ski area , where he joined the Club d'Esquí Val d'Aran.

When he was 15, he competed in his first FIS race in Spain and France . At his first Junior World Championship in Crans-Montana , he ended up in the last quarter of the classification in downhill , super-G and giant slalom, but in three further competitions he still achieved 24th place in giant slalom ( Jasná 2014 ) and 29th place in slalom ( Hafjell 2015 ) Top performances. In addition, he started at two winter Universiades , but did not get beyond a 31st place in the Super-G ( Trentino 2013 ). In January 2015 he made his European Cup debut in the Chamonix slalom . He achieved his best result so far in December 2016 with a shared ninth place in the parallel slalom on the Kronplatz .

On October 25, 2015, he made his World Cup debut in the giant slalom in Sölden . At the end of the season he was crowned Spanish champion in his favorite discipline, slalom, for the first time in Formigal . In January 2017 in Kitzbühel he missed qualifying for the second run by only 19 hundredths of a second and with 33rd place marked the best result for a male Spaniard since 1986. At his first World Championship in St. Moritz , he qualified for both giant slalom and slalom, whereby he left Ivica Kostelić behind, among others . He finished the giant slalom in 35th place, in the slalom he was eliminated.

The following winter he qualified for the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and celebrated his first two wins in the Far East Cup in South Korea . At the games he could not follow these results and was eliminated in both giant slalom and slalom. In January 2019, he qualified for a second run at the Nightrace in Schladming for the first time, which he finished in 24th place. However, due to a serious mistake, he was too late to win points.
