Juan Martín Maldacena (born September 10, 1968 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ) is an Argentine theoretical physicist and string theorist .

Life

Maldacena studied physics from 1985 to 1988 at the Universidad de Buenos Aires , as well as at the Instituto Balseiro of the Universidad de Cuyo in Bariloche , where he obtained a master's degree ( Licenciatura ) in 1991 . In the following year he went to Princeton University , where he achieved a Master of Arts in 1993 and received his PhD in 1996 with Curtis Callan with the work Black Holes in String Theory . He then did a postdoc at Rutgers University . From 1997 to 2001 he was a professor at Harvard University (initially Visiting Associate Professor , 1998 Thomas D. Cabot Associate Professor and from 1999 Professor ). Since then he has been a professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton .

Maldacena's most important scientific contribution is the AdS / CFT correspondence , a conjecture about the equivalence of string theory in an anti-de-sitter space and a conformal field theory defined on the edge of that space. This is the best explicit formulation of the holographic principle to date .

Together with Leonard Susskind , he established the ER-EPR conjecture in 2013. This postulates a connection of entangled quantum particles, the EPR pairs, through (special) wormholes, also called Einstein-Rosen bridges . The conjecture is a suggestion to resolve the information paradox of black holes , which has been exacerbated by Joseph Polchinski's Feuerwall paradox, and, according to the authors, is also a new approach to quantum gravity . After Ping Gao, Daniel Louis Jafferis and Aron C. Wall proposed traversable wormholes and their equivalent description as quantum teleportation in 2016 , this also led to a new approach to the information paradox of black holes.

Awards

From 1998 to 2000, Maldacena was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 1999 he was a Fellow of the MacArthur Foundation . In 2007 he received the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics , in 2008 the Dirac Medal (ICTP) and in 2012 the Pomeranschuk Prize . In the same year 2012 he was also awarded the Fundamental Physics Prize . In 2018 he received the Lorentz Medal of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences and the Albert Einstein Medal .

Maldacena has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2007 and a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences since 2013 .

According to XStructure , Maldacena's publication The Large N Limit of Superconformal Field Theories and Supergravity is the most cited article on the preprint server ArXiv .
