The youth of the German Life Rescue Society e. It sees itself as a children and youth association and is mainly active in this area. Members of the DLRG Youth are, in the sense of the DLRG, all members up to the age of 27 and their elected representatives, whereby the transition from the youth association to the main association is fluid. Like that of the main association, the headquarters are in Bad Nenndorf , Lower Saxony . The DLRG youth is a member of the German Federal Youth Council .

The logo of the DLRG youth is based on that of the main association. It shows the DLRG eagle with the DLRG word mark and the words "Jugend". It is also protected under trademark law in commercial use.

history

The beginnings 1954–1974

After the DLRG was founded in 1913, young people did not initially play a major role. The club consisted mainly of adults and had very few young people. However, the federal states of Hesse, Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony received a large number of children and young people after the war and, despite the negative attitude of the Presidium and the Presidential Council, took up youth work in their field of activity at the end of the 1940s. In 1951, Schleswig-Holstein was the first state association to set youth care work in its statutes. On October 16 and 17, 1954, the Presidential Council decided to call in a representative for youth affairs. Nevertheless, it was still a long way to independent youth work at the federal level, because in 1959, for example, an application by the Schleswig-Holstein state association to introduce youth care work at the federal level was rejected. In 1962 the need for youth work was finally recognized and the DLRG youth was founded at the DLRG federal conference from May 31st to June 3rd for the whole of Germany. Harald Kracht from Schleswig-Holstein was provisionally appointed as the first federal youth warden . At the same time, the youth was included in the statutes of the DLRG under Section 7. A year later, the Federal Youth Conference took place for the first time, which forms the highest decision-making body of the DLRG youth. In 1965, a separate youth regulation was passed at the federal level, which, however, did not contain any structures, interests or objectives of the young people and was more geared towards youth work.

Profiling youth politics 1974–1990

It was not until the early 1970s that the Federal Youth Regulations were revised and adapted to the goals and interests of young people. During this time there were also some disagreements with delegates of the general association. These demanded a subordination of the youth and their goals and wishes to a professional association youth, which is subordinate to the general association. In addition, there was a dispute about current topics such as “ War and Peace ”, “ Unemployment ”, “ Sexuality ” etc. and the question was whether these topics should be publicly discussed and discussed. In 1980 the “DLRG Youth Day” took place in Kassel for the first time and was a complete success with 3000 participants and exceeded all the organizers' expectations.

Pragmatic professionalization from 1990 to today

Since the DLRG Youth was founded, the offices have mostly been held on a voluntary basis. It was not until the mid-1980s that voluntary functionaries were supported more by full-time employees. Since then, the work has been characterized by increasing professionalism . In 2018, a little over 60 percent of the members of the DLRG were children and young people and thus members of the DLRG youth.

In 2013 the DLRG-Jugend celebrated its 50th anniversary, since within the association it traced its founding back to the first Federal Youth Day in Stuttgart in 1963 .

Development of the DLRG youth

organization

structure

The DLRG-Jugend is an independent, publicly recognized children and youth association. It is an integrated part of the general association and sees itself as a form of self-organization for children, adolescents and young adults. The youth have their own order and choose their bodies independently.

The structure of the DLRG youth is essentially the same as the structure of the parent association Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft eV with the difference that the various organs are named youth-related (e.g. youth board, district youth council, state youth day).

Board

The federal executive committee of the DLRG youth is elected every four years by the federal youth day. In the 2017–2021 electoral period, the board of directors includes:

  • Christoph Freudenhammer (Chairman)
  • Carolin Limbach (Deputy Chair)
  • Johanna Lubian (Deputy Chair)
  • Felix Kalkuhl (Deputy Chairman)
  • Marina Lüeße (Deputy Chair)
  • Christian Fritz (Deputy Chairman - elected in 2019)
  • Klaus Groß-Weege (Managing Director - without a voice)

tasks

In their association, social and international work, the DLRG youth feel committed to the principles of democracy , humanity , tolerance , solidarity , plurality and holism . These principles mean that she works for the physical and mental integrity of all people. She is committed to ensuring that every single person can develop freely and comprehensively. She wants to help shape the necessary social conditions. Furthermore, she wants to stand up for nature and the environment and support the main association in the fight against drowning .

In order to be able to cope with all these tasks, the DLRG-Jugend has its own financial resources on its own responsibility.

aims

The DLRG youth has five equal goals. These are set out in the mission statement of the DLRG youth:

  • Save lives;
  • make a contribution to the development of young people to become self-determined, self-confident and responsible personalities;
  • actively and effectively represent the interests of children, adolescents and young adults inside and outside the association;
  • draw attention to social problems and actively contribute to their solution;
  • the equal participation of children, adolescents and young adults in their respective living environments.

Educational work

The aim of the DLRG youth is to introduce their young members to the tasks , training and technology of water rescue in a playful way , as well as to familiarize them with swimming and lifeguarding . In order to be able to achieve this, the vast majority of local groups hold regular (mostly weekly) group and training lessons as well as swimming lessons. Part of the training content is explained in more detail in the article DLRG .

Of course, games , films , handicrafts , barbecues and camaraderie evenings are also organized with fun and games , as well as joint activities and excursions. This happens not only within a local group, but often also together with youth groups from other local groups or organizations such as the fire brigade or within the higher organizational levels.

In addition, the young people are offered seminars that do not necessarily have to do with the topic of water rescue . The range of these seminars is very extensive. Interested young people can, among other things, purchase the youth leader card (JuLeiCa) or attend other seminars on various topics of youth work or education .

Events

Between 1999 and 2016, the DLRG youth organized the "German Lifeguarding Championships" every autumn on behalf of the DLRG. Swimmers and teams from different age groups competed against each other in different disciplines (eg: "obstacle swimming", "rescuing with fins"). The winners were allowed to call themselves "German Masters" in their age group. The event took place exclusively in the hall and was organized from local to federal level. It was carried out in accordance with national regulations. With the 2017 season, the DLRG youth handed over the task of organizing the German championships to the DLRG, which is continuing this in a similar form. Further information on the DLRG competitions : see Rescue Sports

The DLRG and DLRG-Jugend organize the DLRG / NIVEA beach party for children together with their partner NIVEA . The spectacle, which has been taking place since 1989, is intended to make children and their parents fit for the subject of "water" and to draw attention to dangers and the right behavior in and around the water. It takes place one afternoon each on selected beaches on the North and Baltic Sea coasts.

Together with the DLRG youth, the DLRG organizes bathing parties in various swimming pools all over Germany. Under the motto “play, fun and sport”, it is supposed to advertise mass sports and sporting activities. For this purpose, special transport trailers equipped with water play equipment, so-called "mobile games", are available. These are available to the divisions 17 times across Germany.

The DLRG / NIVEA kindergarten day is also offered by the DLRG and the DLRG youth with their partner NIVEA. Its main purpose is to provide the children with information about the sources of danger at the water, teach the bathing rules and teach them how to behave in and around the water, as well as bringing the children closer to information about the tasks and goals of the DLRG.

Every year, the DLRG youth organizes the district or state youth meeting in the districts and state associations . The latter mostly in connection with the state championships in lifeguarding . At these events, all local groups of a district or a regional association meet for a weekend. There is not only swimming in the foreground, but also fun and communication among the local groups. While swimming competitions are also held, there are a variety of other activities for all ages.

Between 2009 and 2016, the DLRG youth organized the federal children and youth meeting (BuKiJu) in connection with the German lifeguard championships. Similar to the district and state youth meetings, the focus here was not only on swimming, but also on fun and leisure. A variety of activities were offered for all ages. With the return of the German championships to the main association, the federal children and youth meeting was suspended.

In some branches, international youth exchange measures are also offered, but in some cases these measures are also carried out under the responsibility of the district or state associations.

Memberships

The DLRG-Youth is a member of the Association of helping youth associations , an association of young organizations in civil protection active organizations. Further members are the Arbeiter-Samariter-Jugend , the THW-Jugend , the German Youth Fire Brigade , the German Youth Red Cross , the Johanniter-Jugend and the Malteser Jugend .
