Jules Andrade (born September 4, 1857 in Paris , † February 25, 1933 in Brighton ) was a French mathematician , physicist and watchmaker .
Life
After studying at the École polytechnique and military service in the artillery, he taught at the University of Rennes . While he was teaching at the University of Montpellier , he took part from June 3, 1899 as an expert in the defense of Alfred Dreyfus ( Dreyfus affair ).
He taught for 26 years as a professor at the Institut de Chronométrie at the University of Besançon . Jules Andrade did research in the field of mechanical clocks on friction , synchronization, disturbances of isochronism , compensation spirals , compensation , regulation and cylindrical spiral springs . In 1913 he received a patent for a chronometer - regulator with cylindrical spirals without end curves.
He was a lecturer at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich in 1897 (with a lecture on non-Euclidean statics), in 1904 in Heidelberg (lecture on the movement of a body on spherical trajectories) and in Toronto in 1924. In 1921 he became a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
