Jules-Clément Lismonde , usually only signed with Lismonde (born May 14, 1908 in Brussels , Belgium, † March 12, 2001 in Linkebeek ) was a Belgian painter , graphic artist and draftsman .

life and work

Jules Lismonde studied art at the academies in Brussels and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode . As a representative of abstract painting , he worked as a draftsman, engraver and painter, as an illustrator and designer of packaging and cardboard boxes and as a designer of tapestries . Around 1930 he learned and drew for some time with Louis Apol (1850–1936). In 1934 he drew industrial plants and created many portrait drawings from 1937 to 1952. After a period of painterly constructivism , he began to paint abstractly from 1959.

He had artistic exchanges with Paul Wunderlich and Piet Clément in Paris. He exhibited with La Jeune Peinture Belge in 1946 and 1947 . In 1950 he had an exhibition in the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam . In 1954 he toured Rome and made numerous lithographs . In 1958 Lismonde received the 5th Venice Biennale Prize and in 1959 the São Paulo Biennale Prize . In 1963 he was a founding member of the Cap d'Tinte artist group . In 1964, his works were shown at the documenta III in Kassel in the famous hand drawings department .

Important retrospectives of his art took place in Brussels in 1977 and 1992. He was a member of the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique .

In 1998 the Maison Lismonde Foundation was set up in Linkebeek .
