Julian Benedict
Julian Benedikt (born September 28, 1963 in Neubeuert ) is a German film director, producer and actor. He is best known for his documentaries on the jazz environment.
life and work
Benedikt grew up in an artistic family - his parents are sculptors, a grandmother and a grandfather were musicians - with a lot of music. After studying classical music in Detmold and Frankfurt am Main , he lived in Rome for two years , where he played as a saxophonist in the Italian rock band Les Fleurs du Mal .
In 1992 he obtained a diploma in the License Franco-Allemande course at the Sorbonne in Paris , which deals with the language, history, culture and regional studies of France and Germany. In 1992 he was the main actor in love at first sight for Rudolf Thome , for which he was awarded the best young actor at the Béziers Festival . In the following years he played as an actor in other French films.
He came into contact with jazz through the music of the American drummer Chico Hamilton , whom he also got to know personally during a concert in Munich . During a stay in New York , he took lessons from him and Bill Saxton . He also dedicated the cinematic portrait Chico Hamilton - Dancing to a different drummer , which was published in 1994, to Hamilton .
In 1997 his film Blue Note - A Story of Modern Jazz was made by the record company Blue Note Records and its founders Alfred Lion and Francis Wolff . This earned him a Grammy nomination in 1998 . His documentary film Jazz Seen about jazz photographer William Claxton with music by Till Brönner followed three years later . In 2006, his essay film Play Your Own Thing - A History of Jazz in Europe was released in cinemas. Thematically, this examination of European jazz focused on the Italian, Polish and Scandinavian jazz scenes. The film is a Danish co-production. There come u. a. Coco Schumann , Palle Mikkelborg , Arild Andersen , Dee Dee Bridgewater , Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen , Jan Garbarek , Georg Baselitz , Wolfgang Dauner , Tomasz Stańko , Stefano Bollani , Enrico Rava , René Urtreger , Albert Mangelsdorff , Joachim Kühn , Paul Kuhn , Joe Zawinul , Chris Barber and Juliette Gréco have their say or play.
In 1999 Benedikt also made the television film Helmut Newton's SUMO - the making of the most expensive book about Helmut Newton . In 2003 the short film One Day in Wolfsburg was made (music by Till Brönner).
Benedict also works with painting.
