Julien de La Rochenoire
Émile Charles Julien de La Rochenoire (born September 13, 1825 in Le Havre , † June 1899 in Paris ) was a French painter and etcher .
life and work
La Rochenoire, originally from Le Havre, studied painting in Paris in the studios of Léon Cogniet , Charles Gleyre and Constant Troyon . From 1857 to 1878 he exhibited his work regularly in the Salon de Paris, using both the name Rochenoire and La Rochenoire . In addition to oil painting, his work also includes pastels, watercolors and etchings. He chose seascapes, genre scenes, historical pictures and landscape motifs from his Norman homeland as motifs . He is best known for his depictions of animals, whereby he often painted cows.
Although his painting was rather conventional and based on the tradition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts , La Rochenoire organized a committee in 1870 to change the mode of election of the jury of the Salon de Paris. The list of candidates drawn up by this committee for the jury includes his friends Charles-François Daubigny and Édouard Manet as well as the names of the painters Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot , Honoré Daumier , Armand Gautier , François Bonvin , Gustave Courbet and Jean-François Millet . Only Millet was later appointed to the jury of the salon. La Rochenoire spent the Franco-Prussian War in London like his painter colleagues Camille Pissarro and Charles-François Daubigny. There he also met Claude Monet , with whom he was also friends. His pastel painting Portrait of Julien de La Rochenoire, made in 1882, testifies to his friendship with Édouard Manet .
