Julius Bauschinger

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Julius Bauschinger (born January 28, 1860 in Fürth , † January 21, 1934 in Leipzig ) was a German astronomer .

Life

From 1896, Bauschinger was director of the Astronomical Computing Institute in Berlin. From 1909 to 1918 he was director of the Strasbourg observatory and from 1920 to 1930 he was director of the Leipzig observatory . His father Johann Bauschinger was an engineer.

Since 1920 he was a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and since 1911 a corresponding member of the Bavarian and from 1927 of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .

In 1991 the asteroid (2306) Bauschinger was named after him.

Celestial mechanics

Bauschinger is regarded as a specialist in orbit determination and has written a comprehensive monograph on various methods. He also wrote articles on numerical mathematics and determination of astronomical constants, including in the Encyclopedia of Mathematical Sciences . Bauschinger did his doctoral thesis under the direction of Hugo Hans von Seeliger , with the title Studies on the Movement of the Planet Mercury (University of Munich, 1884).

Instruments

Bauschinger's inaugural dissertation was entitled On the Bending of Meridian Telescopes (Munich, 1888).

Observations

He was one of the participants in the German expedition to Hartford, Connecticut, to observe the 1882 passage of Venus .

Logarithm table

Together with Jean Peters, Bauschinger was the editor of the first German eight-digit logarithm table, the first volume of which: the eight-digit mantissas of all numbers from 1 to 200,000 was published by Wilhelm Engelmann Verlag, Leipzig in 1910. Volume 2, the eight-digit logarithms of the trigonometric angle functions for every sexagesimal second from 0 ° to 90 °, was published by the same publisher in 1911.
