Ernst Zinner (born February 2, 1886 in Goldberg in Silesia , † August 30, 1970 in Planegg in Bavaria) was a German astronomer and astronomy historian. He was the rediscoverer of the comet Giacobini-Zinner .

Life

After studying in Munich and Jena and doing research in Lund and Heidelberg , Zinner worked in Bamberg from 1910 to 1919 . From 1920 he was a private lecturer and from 1924 associate professor at the University of Munich . From 1926 to 1953 he was director of the Karl Remeis observatory in Bamberg.

In addition to his actual astronomical work, especially on variable stars , Zinner wrote important works on the history of astronomy .

On October 23, 1913, Zinner rediscovered the same comet that Michel Giacobini had discovered in France in 1900 . This happened two rounds later. Since then the comet is called Giacobini-Zinner (21P).

The Zinner lunar crater with a diameter of four kilometers is named after him. In 1939 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1993 the asteroid (4615) Zinner was named after him.
