Julius Karl Arndt (born March 26, 1820 in Alsleben (Saale) , † June 12, 1888 in Wernigerode ) was a Lutheran pastor and hymn poet .

Life

Arndt was born the son of a pastor and studied Protestant theology at the University of Halle . Following his studies, he got a job as a private tutor in Paris and Berlin . In 1849 he was appointed adjunct in Walternienburg near Schönebeck. There he supported his father as an assistant chaplain and later became his successor.

In 1856 Arndt was promoted to superintendent in Walternienburg. In 1861 he came to Wernigerode and became superintendent and pastor there in 1862, with which he led the spiritual chairmanship of the Evangelical Lutheran Consistory in Wernigerode. Committed to church politics, Arndt was a vehement opponent of Otto von Bismarck . It was clear to the Lutheran confession and rejected in 1874 the May Laws public from; therefore he lost his office as superintendent and consistorial councilor.

Julius Karl Arndt was married three times. The marriages resulted in 15 children, and six died in infancy and toddlerhood. The Arndt theologian dynasty continued with their second marriage, Johannes, who was born in 1857 . Johannes Arndt (born March 20, 1857 in Walternienburg, † October 22, 1931 in Bloemfontein , South Africa ) went to South Africa as a missionary in 1881 after five years of training at the Berlin Mission House .

Arndt published two new songs in Wernigerode in 1863 in old folk tunes , of which the call to spiritual return is known: Where to, o tired wanderer you? Return home to the father's house! This hymn is contained, for example, in three-verse form in the Protestant hymn book of the Wiesbaden District Synod, printed by Carl Ritter in Wiesbaden in the 19th century .
