Julius Meyer (born November 16, 1875 in Wanzleben ; † May 31, 1934 in Oldenburg ) was a German trade unionist and politician ( SPD ).

Life and work

Meyer was born as the eldest son of a stone sculptor and well builder Julius Meyer and his wife Dorothee born. Abel. born. After attending elementary school from 1882, he completed an apprenticeship in filing in a forge from 1889 to 1892 . He then worked as a boilermaker and, after his wanderings, as a shipyard worker at the Kaiserliche Werft Wilhelmshaven . After serving as a minister, he worked freelance in Oldenburg, for example for the consumer cooperative and for the newspaper Republik and Norddeutsches Volksblatt . In 1932 he resigned from the SPD. After the seizure of power of the Nazis his professional situation became increasingly difficult. November Revolution

During the November Revolution, Meyer was one of the leading men in the Oldenburger Land . On November 7, 1918, he represented their demands at a soldiers' assembly in Oldenburg, summarized the tasks of the soldiers' council to be formed in ten points that were similar to those of the Kiel Fourteen Points and finally proposed the establishment of the soldiers' council. The next day he spoke at the great people's assembly in Wilhelmshaven, at which the Grand Duke was declared deposed. On the morning of November 11, 1918, he and Paul Hug went to see Minister of State Scheer to obtain the abdication of the Grand Duke, which took place a few hours later.

Public offices

On the same day, Meyer became a member of the Oldenburg regional directorate and thus the interim government of Oldenburg. From June 21, 1919 to April 17, 1923, he was Minister for Social Welfare, Transport and Trade in the government of the Free State of Oldenburg led by Prime Minister Theodor Tantzen . From October 1, 1921 to October 11, 1922, he also took over the management of the Ministry of Justice.
