Jung Ho-seok , Korean 정호석 Jeong Ho-seok , better known as J-Hope (born February 18, 1994 in Gwangju ) is a South Korean rapper , dancer , songwriter and music producer . He is a member of the South Korean boy band BTS .

life and career

1994–2012: childhood and early adolescence

Jung Ho-seok was born on February 18, 1994 in Gwangju , South Korea . He has an older sister named Dawon.

Before he made his debut with the boy band BTS , he was a member of the Neuron dance company . He was relatively well known in the underground scene and won several local awards. In 2009 he became a trainee at JYP Entertainment, but left the label at the end of 2010. Since December 2010 he has been under contract with Big Hit Entertainment . Under the label he was featured as a rapper in the song "Animal" by Jo Kown (released in 2012). J-Hope joined under the BTS label. He was the third member to join the group after RM and Suga .

2013-present: BTS

In June 2013 he made his debut with BTS on Mnets M! Countdown , with their first single, No More Dream . J-Hope has since been involved in the creation of every single BTS album.

The Korea Music Copyright Association , according, had J-Hope for more than 70 songs with.

In February 2018, Big Hit Entertainment announced their first mixtape Hope World . The mixtape was released in early March 2018 and first appeared at number 63 on the US album charts ( Billboard 200 ) and made it to number 38 in the following weeks, higher than any other Korean solo album. The title track "Daydream" took first place on the World Digital Song Charts.

In October 2018, South Korean President Moon Jae-in awarded J-Hope and the rest of the members a medal for their extraordinary contribution to Korean culture and its spread. BTS are the youngest and first idols to receive this medal in the cultural awards.

On June 14th 2019 J-Hope released the soundtrack "A Brand New Day" together with his bandmate V and the Swedish singer Zara Larsson .

On September 27th he released the single "Chicken Noodle Soup" with the singer Becky-G . The title first appeared at number 81 on the Billboard Hot 100 with 9.7 million streams and 11,000 downloads in the week of October 4, 2019. This made J-Hope the first member of BTS to appear on the Hot 100 as a solo artist outside the group landed and the third Korean solo artist to land on the Hot 100 (after Psy and CL) and the sixth Korean artist overall to achieve that. "Chicken Noodle Soup" also debuted at number 1 on the World Digital Songs Charts and is the second J-Hope song to make it into the Hot 100 after "Daydream" (2018).

stage name

His stage name J-Hope (제이 홉) stands for his wish that he can give hope to others with his music, so to speak, can be "The Hope of BTS".

Private life

In 2016, he bought a luxury apartment in South Korea for the equivalent of $ 1.6 million for personal use. J-Hope lives in Hannam-dong , Seoul , with his bandmates.

philanthropy

On his 25th birthday, J-Hope donated South Korean won 100 million (about $ 89,000 US dollars ) to Child Fund Korea to support the youth attending his former high school in Gwangju. He had already donated 150 million won (equivalent to US $ 133,000) to the same organization in December, but requested that the donation remain anonymous for the time being.
