history
Piarist school
From 1727 to 1832 the Piarist School existed on the northern part of Independence Square ( Nepriklausomybės aikštė ). You learned Polish, Latin and Russian. The students took part in the anti-Tsarist movements in 1823/24 and 1831. The school graduated from the architect Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevičius , the engineer Stanislovas Kerbedis u. a.
Bajor school
From 1841 to 1865 the Bajor school was housed in the new castle (now: Klaipėdos g. 3), which was transferred to the Russian teachers' college. The teachers and students participated in the 1863 uprising.
secondary school
The secondary school was here from 1882 to 1915. Although Russification was strong, there was a Lithuanian national movement and Lithuanian newspapers. From 1906 to 1908 the linguist Jonas Jablonskis taught the Lithuanian language.
high school
The first Lithuanian grammar school was established on October 1, 1915. Because of the good education, the school was called "Respublik Panevėž". There were many Lithuanian youth organizations here, such as Meno kuopa, Ateitininkai (a Catholic youth organization), Aušrininkai , the Boy Scouts and Lietuvos šaulių sąjunga (a paramilitary non-governmental organization in support of Lithuanian independence).
Middle school
After the Second World War, the school became a middle school. In 1970 she got the name of the director Juozas Balčikonis . From 1945 to 1992, 179 high school graduates were awarded the gold medal.
