Jure Robič (born April 10, 1965 in Jesenice ; † September 24, 2010 there ) was a Slovenian cyclist and endurance athlete. He was the first participant to win the Race Across America (RAAM) five times.

Career

As a young man, Jure Robič competed in cycling races for small Slovenian teams. In 1989, 1990 and 1992 he became the Slovenian road racing champion. He was a professional soldier in the Slovenian Armed Forces .

In 1999 he took part in his first endurance race at the Australian Crocodile Trophy and finished third. On September 19, 2004, with a total of 834.77 kilometers, he broke the 24-hour world record of the time and in 2005 he won the Tour Ultime, which was held for the first time .

Six weeks after the RAAM victory in 2005, he also won Le Tour Direct , a 4023-km-42,672- Hm race ("2500 miles ... around 140,000 feet") derived from routes of the Tour de France in 7 days and 19 hours.

Victories at the Race Across America

Robič became known as the five-time winner of the Race Across America, namely in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010. In 2004, he covered the 4,761.2 kilometer distance in eight days and only had a total sleep quota of only eight days eight hours.

Robič died on September 24, 2010 while training on a forest road in his hometown Jesenice when he collided with a car on his bike.

Private

Jure's brother Saso died in August 2010. Jure Robič had been married to a nurse since 2006 and leaves behind a son.
