In the Federal Republic of Germany, she first lived in Würzburg and Tübingen, and since 1987 in Bremen. From 1958 to 1972 she worked as a specialist magazine editor, advertising manager and freelancer for newspapers. "In the West she had to start all over again because her literature studies in Leipzig were not recognized. That annoyed her for a long time and meant that she did not want to start a new course for years. Instead, she worked as a housemaid and in industry, anodized fenders, polished in Akkord ball bearings and packaged sweets. 'We had no money at all, we just moved there with a plastic bag full of things,' Jutta Dornheim recalls. "

After this time she decided to study empirical cultural studies, linguistics and modern German literature from 1972 to 1979 in Tübingen. Subsequently, in 1980 she managed an assistant position at the Ludwig-Uhland-Institut in Tübingen and was then from 1981 to 1984 a research assistant at the DFG project "Heilkultur und Krebs" (Healing Culture and Cancer), in the context of which she studied a village with Hermann Bausinger in 1983 with the highly regarded ethnography the Swabian Alb on "Being sick in everyday village life" (1983) on Dr. rer. soc. received his doctorate. The investigation met with great public interest and on April 18, 1983, it was also discussed in Spiegel magazine.

From 1987 to 1995 she worked as an academic adviser at the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Osnabrück in the course "Further training for teachers in health care schools". Since 1995 she has been involved in the establishment of a teaching degree in nursing science. From October 1, 1996 to September 30, 2001, she was in charge of the “Nursing Science” professorship for the “Teacher Training at Vocational Schools / Vocational Specialization: Nursing Science” course at Osnabrück University. From July 1, 1998 to December 31, 2000, she was also in charge of the project "Development. It was funded by the Carl Gustav Carus Foundation for Psychosomatic Research, Zurich, and from June 1, 2001 to March 31, 2003 by the Robert Bosch Foundation, Stuttgart an intervention model to improve the communicative competence of caregivers and those being cared for ”. It was published in December 2000 at the University of Bremen with the text “Medicinal Culture. An interdisciplinary approach to the relationship between health, illness and nursing ”completed his habilitation and acquired the venia legendi for“ nursing science with a focus on the basics of cultural studies ”.

Her academic interests are: cultural studies, everyday medical culture, nursing science, ethnomedicine, folk medicine research, social history of medicine, health and illness, methodology and methods of cultural studies field research as well as communication and gender research.

In addition to her academic interest, she also has an interest in literature. "She tried her hand at writing for the first time when she was 14 years old. Since then, writing has been part of her life. Later, in addition to academic publications under the pseudonym, she wrote glosses for satirical magazines. Since her retirement in 2001, literature has become more prominent. In 2006, Jutta won Dornheim won 1st prize in the poetry competition of the Saarbrücken city association. "
