Jutta Zoff (born January 14, 1928 in Bautzen , † October 28, 2019 in Dresden ) was a German concert harpist , pianist , guitarist , saxophonist , clarinetist and harmonica player . She is best known internationally as the first solo harpist of the Staatskapelle Dresden .

Life

Born in Bautzen in Saxony , Zoff received piano lessons from her father at the age of five , who soon recognized his daughter's musical talent. She then learned guitar from 1939 to 1945 with Margarethe Müller in Dresden and with Heinrich Albert in Gauting and with Ángel Iglesias until the end of the 1950s when he was on tour in Germany. She also familiarized herself with the accordion , saxophone , clarinet and harmonica . At the age of 13 she got a gift to play the harp. In order to improve her harp playing, she traveled to Munich specifically in those years to take music lessons on the harp from Eduard Niedermayr . She was also taught by harpist Heinrich Schlie († 1945), who had been working at the Staatskapelle Dresden since 1929 . After the war-related end of this training, Zoff worked as a freelance artist until 1967. On some of her programs you can find that she performed works for guitar as well as for saxophone and harp on a concert evening as a soloist.

As early as 1939, at the age of eleven, she worked as an accordion virtuoso in Henry Oebels-Oebström's short film " When a little girl plays ". In 1955 she worked as an accordion soloist in Konrad Wolf's film " Once is no time ". In 1962 her music could be heard in Joachim Kunert's film " The Second Track ".

In 1967 she got an engagement at the Staatskapelle Dresden and soon became a celebrated star. There were gigs on almost every continent . She played in the Royal Festival Hall in London , Munich , India , Japan and several Arab countries.

At the age of 63, she ended her career as a solo harpist with the Dresden State Orchestra in 1991 and left the orchestra. The artist gave her last public concert in September 2007 on the occasion of a festive service for the re-establishment of the Dr. Gregorius Mättig Foundation in Bautzen Cathedral . In September 2017 she received the Stifter Medal, which was awarded for the first time that year by the Dr. Gregorius Mättig Foundation.

Jutta Zoff has been involved in numerous record and CD productions. The Schwarzenberg concert harp manufacturer Riedel named one of its model series as a tribute to the artist "Jutta Zoff". The artist Friedrich Krause-Osten created the painting “Portrait of the musician Jutta Zoff” in 1950. It is now in the Bautzen City Museum , to which it was given as a gift by Jutta Zoff in 2004. She was also an honorary member of the Saxon State Opera .
