JJK Jyväskylä (officially: Jyväskylän Jalkapalloklubi or JJK for short ) is a Finnish football club from the central Finnish city of Jyväskylä .

history

The club was founded in 1923 as a general sports club under the name Jyväskylän Palloilijat (JyP). In 1977, the club's ice hockey division and football division split - JYP-77 was created. In 1992, JJK was finally founded as the city's independent soccer club.

In the 1998 season, the club rose from the Ykkönen , Finland's second-highest league, in the third-class Kakkonen . It was not until 2006 that they were promoted to the Ykkönen again, where they could establish themselves in the top group and end the 2007 season on a respectable 3rd place in the table. The following year they fought with FC Viikingit , who had been relegated from the Veikkausliiga the year before , for a long time a duel for 1st place, which entitles them to direct promotion to the top division, the Veikkausliiga. In the end, JJK was able to prevail, also thanks to an outstanding Babatunde Wusu , who scored 22 goals in the entire season and thus became the top scorer, and rose to the Veikkausliiga for the first time. The team ended their first first division season in 2009 on the penultimate place in the table and secured relegation in the relegation against the second of the Ykkönen, Kokkolan Palloveikot .
