The head is a 402.1  m above sea level. NHN high mountain near Kallmerode in the urban area of Leinefelde-Worbis in the Eichsfeld district in northwest Thuringia .

geography

The mountain is located one kilometer north of Kallmerode and two kilometers south of Leinefelde in Obereichsfeld. Immediately to the west at the foot of the mountain in the valley of the Ohne the hamlet of Beinrode with the former monastery of Beinrode lies .

The hilltop is in the transition area from the Dün (with the Kirchberg 447.0 m) to the Worbiser Graben (with the Eulenberg 388.0 m), which separates the Eichsfelder Kessel from the upper Leinetal . The southern part of the Ohmgebirge rift zone extends here as far as the Dün and divides its northern slopes strongly. The federal road 247 between Dingelstädt and Leinefelde uses this depression to cross the Dün and leads directly past the mountain.

nature

Like the neighboring mountains, the geological foundation of the hilltop consists of shell limestone, while the Leine and the Ohne Oberer and Mittlerer Buntsandstein stand for the valleys . The mountain is completely forested, mostly conifers.

In the valley between the Köpchen and the Kirchberg there is a larger landfill of the Eichsfeld district. No more waste has been stored since around 2005 and the Eichsfeldwerke began to recultivate the mountain of rubbish. They operate gas wells there to generate energy and it is still used as a small delivery station for receiving small waste.

Castle on the head

On the hilltop of the Köpfchen there are remains of a medieval castle complex, consisting of a core castle with a length of 20 m and width of 18 m, a moat separates this from an outer castle (about 20 by 30 m). Another rampart and moat separates the castle from the rest of the mountain ridge. Apart from the ramparts and moats, no remains of the wall were found, a circular depression in the main castle could point to a former donjon. It is not known when the castle was built; fragments of hollow bricks, shards of wall and clay pots that were found indicate settlement up to the 14th / 16th centuries. Century. There are no direct references to a castle at this location, and there is no historical name. Possibly it is the Davidsburg , mentioned in 1303 , located near the Scharfenstein Castle . In it, the Archbishop of Mainz, Gerhard, leaves half of the castle to the knights Friedrich von Rosdorf and Hildebrand von Hardenberg with the objection that the castle remains open to the archbishop. It is possible that David Castle is also Falkenberg Castle . Other authors see a Schartenberg castle in Davidsburg

A reliable statement about the owners and the function of the castle (e.g. monitoring of the road in the valley) is not given. It is not known whether the abandonment of the castle is related to the desert fall of the village of Beinrode . Presumably the stones were broken off after the castle was abandoned and reused in the construction of the Beinrode Vorwerk.
