annotation

The cavalry regiment initially consisted of four and later of three divisions.

A division comprised three squadrons of two companies each in an Austrian (later Austro-Hungarian) cavalry regiment. The three divisions (battalions) of the regiment were (theoretically) led by the colonel, the lieutenant colonel and the major. This is where the name comes from. (The former 4th Division was called the 2nd Majors Division.)
