The type series KHD A8L 614 R was a two-axle diesel locomotive with chain or cardan shaft drive for the shunting service.

A total of 66 locomotives were built by Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz (KHD) between 1953 and 1960 . With this type the engine designation was used for the designation of the locomotive for the last time.

Some locomotives have been preserved as memorials or running examples on various museum railways.

development

After the Second World War , air-cooled engines were used extensively at KHD for vehicles with internal combustion engines.

A series with such engines were the diesel locomotives of the series KHD A8L 614 R with 66 copies. They were in the performance range of the Deutz OMD 130 R and should replace the vehicles of this model series. The engine designation was used for the type designation, with the KHD A8L 614 R , A = vehicle engine, 8 = number of cylinders, L = air-cooled, 6 = sixth version of the engine, 14 = piston stroke of the engine in cm, R = regular-gauge shunting locomotive.

The locomotives were used for shunting in industrial plants. 27 locomotives were delivered to German industrial companies, further locomotives were manufactured for European companies.

technology

The locomotives had a front end and a rear driver's cab. After the fluid transmission , the axles were driven by a chain drive.

Some of the locomotives were equipped with explosion-proof machinery. A spark arrester was attached to the exhaust pipe , the engine could only be started with compressed air. There was a handwheel for operation on the front circuit.

commitment

Several of the locomotives have been preserved on museum railways, as well as in Switzerland, France and Sweden.

Ohler Eisenwerk

A locomotive was delivered to the Ohler Eisenwerk in 1955. It was still there in 2003.

Voith

At Voith in Heidenheim , a locomotive was used for shunting tasks from 1956 onwards. It was given to the Brenzbahn Museum Association in 1994 and is located with the Ulm Railway Friends on the Amstetten – Gerstetten local railway .

Chemical factory Uetikon

A locomotive delivered to Switzerland was in operation at CU Chemie Uetikon from 1957 to 1993. Then it came to EUROVAPOR and was preferably used on the Kandertal Railway . The locomotive is operational and has the number 98 80 3434 102-0 D-KTB in the German vehicle settings register .

Arzberg power plant

A locomotive was delivered for the Arzberg power station in 1957, which provided shunting services until 1983. Then the locomotive came to the German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt-Wirsberg .

Margarine union

Several locomotives for shunting tasks were purchased from Margarine Union in Hamburg in 1957. A locomotive was in use until 1989 and came to the Geesthacht Railway Working Group as V2 .

Deutsche Erdoel AG

A locomotive was delivered to DEA in 1957 and used in the Hankensbüttel oil station. The locomotive had an explosion-proof machine system. In 1962, the East Hanoverian Railways acquired the locomotive, which was given the designation Köf 0606 . In 1998 it was given to the steam locomotive friends in Salzwedel .

Schiess AG

A locomotive has been in use at Schiess AG in Düsseldorf since 1958. It was in use until the 2010s and is located in the Rheinisches Industriebahn-Museum .

Siegerland smelting works

The smelters Siegerland used from 1958 a locomotive after changing owners 2008 MaLoWa in Klostermansfeld came.
