Hell was one of the first Art Nouveau cabarets in Vienna . With the still existing cabaret Simpl and the former Moulin Rouge , it was one of the leading cabarets in Vienna and also in the entire German-speaking area. It was played, with interruptions, from 1906 to 1937 in the basement of the Theater an der Wien , Linke Wienzeile 6.

history

In the autumn of 1906, the two folk actors and theater entrepreneurs Siegmund Natzler and Leopold Natzler opened the theater and cabaret Die Hölle in the basement of the Theater an der Wien. Hell was one of the most famous and important entertainment establishments in German-speaking countries. It was committed to the spirit of French cabaret and a talent factory for entertainers of all kinds. Ralph Benatzky , Fritz Grünbaum , Karl Farkas , Hans Moser , Hugo Wiener , Mela Mars (1882-1919) and Stella Kadmon are among those whose careers in hell started.

Joseph Urban and Heinrich Lefler , both members of the artists' association Hagenbund , designed two splendid Art Nouveau rooms: the theater, which is now the break room of the Theater an der Wien, and the so-called “Höllensaal”, which is red and red, with boxes and flickers It was decorated with gold flames and fitted with tall mirrors. In addition, there was a restaurant. Franz Lehár , Edmund Eysler and the young Robert Stolz wrote one-act vaudeville operettas for Hell , Béla Laszky (1867-1935) and Ralph Benatzky frivolous songs that were performed by the Diseusen Mela Mars and Josma Selim . Fritz Grünbaum read from his own poems, and Grete Wiesenthal performed dances. Hell was one of the leading cabarets in German-speaking countries for more than 20 years . Cabaret entrepreneurs like Rudolf Nelson from Chat Noir in Berlin and agents went to hell to hire new actors for their own establishments. The cabaret was played continuously from 1906 to 1916, then again with the opening of the Orient Bar in the "Hölle" from May 18, 1918 to 1928. In autumn 1929, the comedians' theater moved into the rooms of the former hell and played them until March 1931.

Since 2010, Hell has been shown again as the cabaret Die Hölle with historical cabaret programs. Under the artistic direction of Georg Wacks , the Diseuse Elena Schreiber , the art piper and impressario of the last pleasant opera theater Stefan Fleischhacker , the chansonnier Martin Thoma and Christoph Wagner-Trenkwitz with musical accompaniment from the Albero Verde ensemble perform in the basement of the Theater an der Wien revive the spirit of hell in the 21st century. In their programs, the past becomes a mirror of the present and unites with it in a lustful dance through cultural history, based on the motto of the great cabaret artist Armin Berg, "This is how everything in the world turns".
