The election to the 18th state parliament of Schleswig-Holstein on May 6, 2012 was an early election; it became necessary after the legislative period was terminated by a ruling by the state constitutional court on August 30, 2010. It was the second early state election in a row; for the state elections in 2009, the state parliament had already been dissolved with a vote of confidence by the prime minister before the regular end of the legislative period.
