On July 15, 2009, Peter Harry Carstensen announced that he no longer wanted to continue the coalition with the SPD. After a resolution proposed by the CDU parliamentary group in the state parliament to dissolve parliament failed on July 20, Carstensen put the vote of confidence on July 23 , which he expected to lose. This cleared the way for new elections , which took place on September 27, 2009, parallel to the 2009 Bundestag election. He dismissed all four SPD ministers on July 20. This finally ended the grand coalition. Schleswig-Holstein was led by a CDU minority government until the Carstensen II cabinet (CDU and FDP) was sworn in.
