action

Smith is an 18 year old film student who sleeps with women and men. He has strange dreams in which he walks naked through a corridor, sitting next to him is his roommate Thor, his lesbian best friend Stella, his mother and the student London. Plus two young women he has never seen before. At the end of the corridor is a black door with the number 19. When Smith opens the door in a dream, all he sees is a red dumpster. Smith goes to college with his best friend, Stella, whom he has known since ninth grade. He tells her pretty much everything that annoys him, such as his peculiar, well-trained straight roommate Thor, who is a surfer and "stupid as bread". So that would actually be Smith's type. Unfortunately, Thor only goes out with women. Smith gets a little letter that says nothing more than: You are the chosen son. He doesn't know what that means.

One evening Smith goes to a party with Stella because Stella has been invited by a certain Lorelei. When Smith sees Lorelei, he recognizes her immediately because she is one of the unknown women in his dream. But they have never met before. Shortly afterwards, after Stella and Lorelei abandon Smith, a girl with red hair stumbles towards Smith. And Smith recognizes this woman too, because it is the other unknown person from his dream. Before Smith can say anything, however, the woman vomits on his shoe and disappears. When Smith tries to clean his shoes in the toilet, he meets a student from London, who also goes to the same college. After a quick chat about Smith's sexual attitudes, whether he's straight or bisexual, they have sex. At the same time, Stella and Lorelei also have sexual intercourse. For Smith and London, that doesn't mean a relationship, they remain friends. Stella and Lorelei, on the other hand, come together.

To clear his head, Smith goes to the nude beach one morning, where he meets a man named Hunter. They also have sex, but Smith learns that Hunter is married and breaks off contact. When Smith goes back to his room, he sees his roommate Thor in underwear with his buddy Rex fighting on the floor. London seduces Rex and makes him have sex with her. They have a threesome on Smith's 19th birthday. After a while Stella learns that Lorelei is not only insatiable, but also a troubled witch. Stella tries to break up with Lorelei, but that becomes her undoing because Lorelei tries to strangle Stella while brushing her teeth. When the water splashes on Lorelei, she falls to the ground and does not move. Seconds later, when Stella wants to get help, Lorelei is as if swallowed by the earth.

During this time Smith dreams again of the mysterious red-haired girl who is followed with him by three men in animal masks. Smith later finds out that the girl's head was cut off. Smith runs into the twin sister of the girl who was killed, who says that they were kidnapped years ago by men wearing animal masks. That same evening he meets a guy named Oliver who appears to be interested in Smith.

After a while, Smith finds out that there is a secret underground sect called The New Order. The leader of this sect looks exactly like Smith's allegedly deceased father. When the men in the animal masks even kidnap Smith, London and Smith's mother in a van, the truth emerges. The three masked men were Thor, Rex and Hunter. They belong to the sect that Smith's father leads. Smith's father has many illegitimate children, and even London is his half-sister since her father also disappeared.

Meanwhile, Stella, Oliver and the permanently stoned Messiah are after them. It turns out that Oliver has the same powers as Lorelei, only he uses them carefully and tries to protect Smith. The Messiah also wants to protect Smith from the sect. Thor, Rex and Hunter try to get the abductees to a shelter to survive, as the goal of the sect is to blow up the world. Whoever does not get into the shelter will die, and Smith was the chief's firstborn son, so he will succeed him.

In the end, Smith's father pushes the button that makes the world explode, with the exception of the shelter.

criticism

“The cheaply unfolded conspiracy story and the exaggerated humor ultimately reduce the longings and despair of their characters to absurdity. A criticism of the lack of utopia in a youth culture, packaged as a college film, which lacks any spirit of resistance. "

"" Kaboom "is one of his lighter films, sympathetic and accessible, but also wild and loud and colorful and brutal again, life is a dangerous but funny party, before the apocalypse the orgasm. And that doesn't even seem strained. The great strength of Gregg Araki is to draw emphatically unusual characters with self-evident credibility, without showing them off as freaks. He loves his characters, and if one of them is a crazy witch on a quest for revenge, then she doesn't have to be a bad person - she could have her reasons. Araki will try to find them. "

"Once again, independent filmmaker Gregg Araki (" City, Friends & Sex "," Mysterious Skin "," Totally F *** ed Up "," Nowhere ") tells a cheap but entertaining mix of teenage drama , Thriller, horror film, and relationship comedy. Even if the narration is not always consistent, not only the genres but also the levels between reality, dream and vision mix in a fun way. "
