Kadyktschan ( Russian Кадыкчан ) is an abandoned urban-type settlement in the Oblast Magadan ( Russia ). According to the 2010 census in Russia, the place has 0 inhabitants. Kadyktschan is about 65 kilometers northwest of Sussuman , the administrative center of the Rajon. The name of the settlement comes from the indigenous Eweni language and means something like "small gorge".

history

Kadyktschan was built by Gulag prisoners for coal mining during World War II . Later on, miners also lived there, who supplied the Arkagalinskaya GRES thermal power station in Mjaundscha with coal.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , coal mining in the region became increasingly unprofitable. After an explosion in a mine that left six people dead in 1996, the government decided to close all mines and subsidize residents' exodus. According to official information, the settlement was completely deserted in 2010, even if tourists reported one or two residents in 2012.

traffic

The R504 Kolyma road, which connects Magadan with Nizhny Bestjach near Yakutsk , passes the settlement .
