The Sussumanski rajon ( Russian Сусуманский район ) is a Rajon of Magadan Oblast in northeastern Russia . The administrative center is the city of Sussuman .
geography
With 46,800 km², the area of the Rajons is almost three times as large as that of Thuringia . It is located at the latitude of Trondheim and just east of the longitude of Japan .
Neighboring areas
The Sussumanski rajon is located in the northwest of the oblast. In the northwest it borders on the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) , to the east and south by three Rajons Oblast Magadan, from east to west the Srednekanski rayon ( Среднеканский район ), the Jagodninski rayon ( Ягоднинский район ) and Tenkinski rayon ( Тенькинский район ) .
Relief and rivers
The Rajon comprises two parts of the catchment area of the Kolyma flowing into the Arctic Ocean , on the one hand that of the source river Ajan-Jurjach ( Аян-Юрях ) with the Mjaundscha ( Мяунджа ) as well as left tributaries of the upper reaches, on the other hand the source areas of the left tributaries of the Kolyma middle reaches Popowka ( Поповка ) and Yassachnaja ( Ясачная ). The Sussumanski rajon is therefore northwest of the continental divide, but southeast of the highest mountains in the region. The western border of the Rajon forms the eastern end of the Verkhoyansk Mountains , the northern border the Tscherski Mountains , the eastern border the southern end of the Kolyma Mountains .
history
There were numerous labor camps in the Rajon during the Stalin era. The forced laborers were used in gold mines, among other things.
population
As in many areas in the Far East of Russia, the population has decreased drastically since 1990:
year | Residents |
---|---|
1959 | 35,365 |
1970 | 41,573 |
1979 | 47,787 |
1989 | 47,950 |
2002 | 14,022 |
2010 | 9,513 |
Administrative division
Since the administrative reform in 2006 (with later adjustments) the Rajon has been divided into three municipalities (gorodskoje posselenije) and one rural municipality (selskoje posselenije), which together comprise only six localities. Other localities are located on non-parish territory (meschselennaja territorija) and are directly subordinate to the Rajon administration. However, some of these places (some of the urban-type settlements ) have been de facto or formally abandoned, as have others since the 1990s.
