Kagerō Project ( Japanese カ ゲ ロ ウ プ ロ ジ ェ ク ト , Kagerō Purojekuto ) is a Japanese media franchise that revolves around a group of youth with supernatural abilities. It started with a series of songs for the vocal software Vocaloid by the artist Jin (Shizen no Teki-P). Music videos followed, a light novel and manga series written by Jin, and an anime series. Light novel and manga became known as Kagerou Daze - after a song title in the series - the anime as Mekakucity Actors after the names of the protagonists.

content

The 18-year-old unemployed and couch potato Shintarō Kisaragi ( 如月 伸 太郎 ) has been haunted for two years by Ene, an intelligent computer program with the shape of a girl on his computer. When he has to leave his room and go shopping, he is taken hostage in the mall. In the process he gets to know the Mekakushi-Dan ( Eng . "Blindfold Gang"), a group of young people with various supernatural abilities, all of whom are connected to their eyes. Together with them and Ene, he can overpower the hostage-takers. Shortly before, his younger sister Momo Kisaragi ( 如月 桃 ) also became part of the group. She attracts everyone's attention, which is what made her a pop star . The group wants to help her control her special ability.

The core of the group are the three friends Tsubomi Kido ( 木 戸 つ ぼ み ), Kōsuke Seto ( 瀬 戸 幸 助 ) and Shūya Kano ( 鹿野 修 哉 ), who grew up together as orphans. They live together in the hiding place of the Mekakushi-Dan, led by Kido, who can escape the attention of others. With this ability, she is the exact opposite of Momo Kisaragi. Seto can read the minds of others, and Kano can appear and deceive anyone as they please. While Seto almost never uses his ability, Kano uses it all the time, leaving everyone in the dark about his true feelings. Some time before Momo, the shy Marry Kozakura ( 小 桜 茉莉 ) had been brought into the group by Seto. It can freeze others.

After the events in the mall, Ene and then Shintarō, the latter rather reluctantly, becomes a member of the group. In the city Shintarō later meets the shy and ignorant of the world Haruka Kokonose ( 九 ノ 瀬 遥 ), called Konoha. He lives with a friend who also has 12-year-old Hibiya and Hiyori over the holidays. Hibiya is in love with Hiyori and therefore followed her to the city over the holidays. However, she doesn't want to know anything about him and adores the cool-looking Konoha. Now both children have disappeared and Konoha is looking for them. Together with Shintaro, he sees them being kidnapped and intervenes. This leads to an accident that seems very strange to Shintarō. The others of the Mekakushi-Dan visit the grave of the founder Ayano Tateyama ( 楯 山 文 乃 ). She turns out to be Ene's classmate when she was still a student. All of them, including Shintaro, had already met two years earlier at a school festival. Shintarō was close friends with Ayano and Kido, Seto and Kano grew up together as Ayano's adoptive siblings. Haruka was in love with his classmate Takane Enomoto ( 榎 本 貴 音 ), called Ene, and they were both at the school festival. After the festival both perished: the always weak Haruka then took the form of Konoha with superhuman strength, Ene was reborn in Shintaro's computer.

In the hospital, the group meets Hibiya, whom they bring to their hiding place because of his awakening powers. Kido explains that they all got their powers from near-death experiences in which they entered a mysterious world called "Heat Haze". Relatives who were there stayed there. Kano, who left the cemetery with Ene separately from the others, explains what he learned from Ayano about the powers. These come from a snake that rules an eternal magical world. This was once created by Medusa Azami, who fell in love with a person. In order to escape his and her daughter's mortality, she created a world for her family in which they do not age and die, the Heat Haze. But they were betrayed by other people and Azami withdrew into the Heat Haze. When her daughter and their daughter, Marry, were killed by humans, she resurrected them both and has since drawn all humans into the Heat Haze who die on the same date. Some of them came back with the skills of hitting. The world and the serpents that rule it have since become independent. This knowledge was passed on to Ayano's mother, after her death Ayano and then Kano found out about it. Kenjirō Tateyama ( 楯 山 研 次 朗 ) owned one, the father of Ayano, stepfather and teacher of the other.

Kano and Ene find their bodies in the basement of the school, so that they no longer only have to live in electronic devices. At the same time Shintarō's ability awakens: he had become friends with Marry and became her everlasting memory. The rest of the group now reaches Kenjirō. The snake reveals that it is kept alive in the world and that this world is only created through Marry's desire for a fulfilled life with her friends. This is always created by a new world and then destroyed again by the snake, so that it too is revived. But through Shintarō's memories, Marry can now free herself from this cycle and defeat the snake with the help of Konoha and Ayano from the Heat Haze. This frees everyone from the snake's curse and allows them to live on in the real world.
