The Kalich (German Kelchberg ) is a 536 m high mountain in Northern Bohemia , on whose summit plateau the remains of the former Kelchburg can be found. The vertical 40 m high rock cliffs made of Klingstein ( phonolite ) on the summit are striking , from which there is a good view. Its southern slope to Třebušín (Triebsch) forms a ledge that was previously used for agricultural purposes.

Location and surroundings

The Kelchberg is located 9 km northeast of the city Litoměřice (Leitmeritz) in the right Elbe part of the Bohemian Central Uplands . The church is at its foot Třebušín ( Triebsch ).

history

The Kelchburg was probably built in the middle of the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights Order in Pitschkowitz and later also in Triebsch to protect those coming . It consisted of a residential building on the south-western summit rock and rooms carved into the rock. The fountain lay in the saddle between the cliffs on the summit.

During the Hussite Wars it was besieged by Jan Žižka , who took it in late May 1421 and made it his seat. Although King Sigismund enfeoffed his vassal Sigismund von Wartenberg on Tetschen with the castle on February 5, 1422 , this act remained of a formal nature, as Žižka remained the actual owner. A siege by Wartenberg in August 1421 was unsuccessful, as were later attempts. Žižka expanded the castle massively, he built a guard tower on one of the rocks and a stone residential tower on the other . After the shape of the tower with a protruding upper floor, it was called Žižka vom Kelch from then on. After the death of the Hussite leader in 1424, the chalice remained in the possession of his siblings Jaroslav and Anežka.

After the devastating defeat of the Hussites in the Battle of Lipan on May 30, 1434 , it came into the possession of Wilhelm von Ileburg on the Ronburg . During the Wartenberg feud , Ilburg participated in the incursions of the Wartenbergers into the areas of the cities of Zittau and Görlitz . In 1437 , the troops of the Upper Lusatian Six- City League stormed the Kelchburg and burned it down.

The last documented gentleman on the chalice was Jeschek Swoganowsky von Boskowitz in 1470. In 1575 the ruin became part of the newly formed Triebsch estate.

Today remains of the fortification walls and the castle gate are still preserved. The location of the collapsed well is clearly visible through a crater.

Excavations are currently taking place in the area of the castle.

On the 2 km northeastern 593.8 m high mountain Panna ( Virgin ) at Řepčice ( beet Dörfel ) are the ruins of another castle, whose history is closely linked to the chalice. According to a legend, there was an underground passage between the Virgin and the Chalice, which, however, could never have existed due to the geological nature of the peaks.

There is no definite knowledge about the origin of the stone walls on the south and east slopes of the mountain.

At the end of the 19th century there was also a mountain inn on the Kelch, but it no longer exists today.

Floristic features

The spring flora of the mountain is noteworthy, typical are: fragrant violets , liverworts , wood anemones .
