The camel grass ( Cymbopogon schoenanthus ) is a plant species from the genus lemon grass ( Cymbopogon ) within the sweet grass family (Poaceae).
description
Vegetative characteristics
The camel grass grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 30 to 120 centimeters.
Generative characteristics
The golden yellow inflorescence is 5 to 40 centimeters long.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20.
Occurrence
The camel grass occurs in North Africa , Somalia , Ethiopia , Sudan , Kenya , on the Arabian Peninsula , the Persian Highlands and the Punjab .
Systematics
One can distinguish between two subspecies :
- Cymbopogon schoenanthus subsp. proximus (Hochst. ex A.Rich.) Maire & Weiller : It occurs from the Sahara and the Sahel zone to Kenya and the Sinai Peninsula.
- Cymbopogon schoenanthus subsp. schoenanthus : It occurs from the Sahara and the Sahel zone to Iran.
use
An essential oil , the so-called camel grass oil , is extracted from the camel grass . It is therefore also grown as a useful crop. The oil is used as a fragrance and as an invigorating substance . The extract from camel grass is considered to soothe and relieve itching .
Plant diseases
The camel grass is attacked by the rust fungi Uromyces schoenanthi and Puccinia schoenanthi .
Common names
For Cymbopogon schoenanthus the other common German names exist in addition to camel grass : Fragrant rush, Cameleshov, Cameleshöuwe, Canadian hay, camel hay, camel straw, squinant and rusagras.
